The LVAV is the Portuguese-standard steel-tape-armoured low-voltage power cable for direct burial without additional mechanical protection. It uses compact-stranded Class-2 aluminium conductors, each insulated with black PVC, assembled with non-hygroscopic fillers and bound with a binder tape into a round core. A PE (polyethylene) bedding tape is lapped over the core, followed by a double galvanised steel-tape armour and a black PVC outer sheath. The PVC insulation gives the cable a lower dielectric constant and excellent resistance to oils, chemicals and water, while the steel-tape armour provides crush and rodent resistance. Rated at 0.6/1 kV and manufactured to IEC 60502-1, it is the workhorse of direct-burial LV distribution in Portuguese-speaking markets.
Applications: Direct burial in the ground for power distribution from substations to consumers; industrial plants and factory yards; cable ducts and trenches; underground connections between transformer substations, switching stations and commercial buildings; rural electrification and agricultural installations. The armour makes it the right choice where the cable is exposed to mechanical damage, soil settlement or rodent activity. Suitable for fixed installations where a separate earth core is required (4-core version) and for networks built to Portuguese NP standards.
