The 630 mm² AAC is a sixty-one wire all aluminium conductor with 3.63 mm strands, an overall diameter of 32.6 mm, a calculated weight of 1738.3 kg/km, a rated strength of 100.80 kN and a D.C. resistance of 0.0458 Ω/km at 20 °C. It is used where a distribution feeder has to deliver a large block of load but the route cannot be rebuilt for a higher voltage: industrial estate supplies, water works and pumping stations, airport and port distribution circuits, and the main feeder out of a substation serving a dense commercial area. In these positions the conductor is judged on current capacity, on mechanical security across the spans involved, and on whether the fittings and clamps on the existing line can take the extra tension.
Electrical and Mechanical CaseAt 0.0458 Ω/km this conductor carries a heavy feeder load with low loss, which matters because feeder losses are continuous and accumulate over the life of the circuit; the shorter payback often justifies the larger size on its own. The sixty-one wire stranding spreads current evenly around the surface and keeps the conductor round under tension, giving a lower surface stress than an equivalent seven wire build and reducing the audible noise and radio interference risk on lines that run close to housing. The 100.80 kN rated strength allows longer spans than the smaller AAC sizes, so a feeder can cross a road, a rail corridor or an industrial yard without an intermediate pole, and the all aluminium build stays free of the steel core corrosion that eventually condemns ACSR in wet or polluted environments. Weight is the trade-off at 1738.3 kg/km, so existing poles and cross-arms need checking before substitution on a live route.
Stranding, Testing and Drum HandlingAluminium 1350 rod is drawn to 3.63 mm with the temper controlled along the coil so that resistance and strength stay within the design values from the first metre to the last. Each wire is inspected for diameter, die marks, slivers and burrs before it reaches the strander, and defective wire is removed rather than patched. The sixty-one wires are stranded in concentric layers with lay length and tension set for the size, so the conductor keeps its roundness, the outer layer stays closed after cutting, and the ends are easy to prepare for compression joints on site. Finished lengths are checked for overall diameter, lay, weight and D.C. resistance, and a tensile test on the completed conductor verifies the rated strength. Because the conductor is heavy per metre, drums are sized and braced for the load and the barrel diameter is matched to the bending radius so the conductor is not kinked during transport or payoff.

High capacity distribution feeders, industrial estate and port supplies, water works and pumping station circuits, dense commercial area feeders, and long spans across roads, rail corridors or yards. Check pole and cross-arm loading before replacing a smaller conductor on an existing route.
Packaging and Quality AssuranceSupplied on braced heavy drums sized for the conductor weight, with flange marking for model, size, stranding, length, standard and batch. Packing list and inspection record accompany the shipment, and third-party inspection can be arranged when required by the contract.
