The AAAC 518 mm² conductor is built from thirty-seven 4.22 mm wires of 6201-T81 aluminium alloy, with an overall diameter of 29.54 mm, a calculated weight of 1426.9 kg/km, a rated strength of 152.79 kN and a D.C. resistance of 0.0641 Ω/km at 20 °C. It is a long span size. Networks use it to cross rivers, reservoirs, valleys and highway corridors where intermediate supports are impossible or too expensive, and where the conductor therefore has to carry the full span load, survive wind and ice loading without excessive sag, and still deliver the current the line was designed for. The 152.79 kN rated strength is what makes those spans practical: it allows high stringing tension with a safe working margin, while the homogeneous alloy construction keeps the conductor reliable in the damp, polluted conditions that usually accompany river crossings.
Built for the Difficult SpanLong spans punish every weakness in a conductor. The 6201-T81 alloy gives roughly twice the strength of plain aluminium for the same size, so the 518 mm² can be tensioned hard enough to control sag across a wide crossing without approaching its rated limit, and it does so without a steel core that would need cathodic protection or would corrode where the crossing passes over water and wet ground. A D.C. resistance of 0.0641 Ω/km keeps the electrical loss low over the longer route length a crossing usually implies, and the continuous rating of 663 A under the standard conditions of 0.6 m/s wind, 1200 W/m² solar radiation, 50 °C ambient and 80 °C conductor temperature gives the design engineer a defensible basis for capacity. Thirty-seven wire stranding produces a round, smooth conductor that seats cleanly in suspension and tension clamps and reduces surface stress at the fittings, which is where long span conductors normally fail first.
Alloy, Stranding and Test RegimeThe 6201 alloy is melted to a checked chemistry, cast and rolled to rod, then heat treated so that drawn wire reaches the T81 temper with 52.5 % IACS conductivity and the tensile strength the span design assumes. Both properties are sampled along the coil rather than at a single point, because a soft patch in one wire transfers load to its neighbours and distorts the sag. Wire is drawn to 4.22 mm and inspected for diameter and surface condition, with laps, slivers and die marks rejected before stranding. Thirty-seven wires are stranded in layers under controlled lay length and tension; the outer layer is kept free of joints so that no brazed or welded section sits in the most highly stressed part of the conductor. Each production length is measured and weighed, tested for D.C. resistance, and tensile tested on the finished conductor to verify the 152.79 kN rating. Plant quality management follows ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001:2007.

River, reservoir, valley and highway crossings, long rural spans with sparse support points, lines crossing difficult terrain where tower placement is restricted, and routes over water or wet ground where steel core corrosion would be a maintenance liability. Span design should be confirmed against wind and ice loading and the permitted sag at the crossing.
Packaging and Quality AssuranceDelivered on heavy wooden or wood-and-steel drums with flange marking for model, size, stranding, length, standard and batch. Drum length is agreed with the customer so that each crossing can be pulled from a single length without a mid-span joint wherever possible.
